Lakes in Manipur

Scenic and serene, the lakes in Manipur certainly increase the charm of the state with their existence. Home to the popular Loktak Lake, Manipur is home to equally surreal if not sized lakes that make for great sightseeing places. The state’s plain areas, as well as hilly regions, are replete with stunning lakes that any nature lover would love to visit. Loktak Lake is not only the most famous lake in Manipur but is also the largest lake in the state. Known for its Phumdis, this lake marks the prominent attraction of Manipur tourism giant Keibul Lamjao National Park. The second largest lake in Manipur is Pumlen Pat in Thoubal that also reckoned to be a historic lake.

The Ikop Pat in Khangabok is a freshwater lake fed by Arong River that has a saucer-shaped basin with a gentle slope and a much-silted bottom. Other prominent lakes in the plain area of Manipur include Yaral Lake in Imphal east district, Waithou Lake on Indo-Myanmar Road, Nganglou Lake, Utra Pat, Kharung, Loukoi Pat, and Isok Lake in Bishnupur District, Pairen Pat, and Lamphel Pat in Imphal West.

The lakes in hill area of Manipur include the beautiful Zeilad Lake in Tamenglong that is famous for pythons, fish, water birds, tortoises, ducks, cranes, and teals. Another important mountain lake that is must visit is Kachouphung Lake - near Ukhrul which is also called Azoa Jenephiu Magi Lake and is known for a large number of fishes. Other than these, the district of Tamenglong also houses Thengu lake and in Churachandpur district one can find Patallien Village lake that are worth seeing in Manipur.
