Phodang Monastery Sikkim

Phodong Monastery comes under the Kagyupa Sect, and was founded by the fourth King Gyurmed Namgyalm. Amidst the construction of monastery, King Gyurmed Namgyalm heavenly aboded but, with the help of supporters, the construction of monastery was completed in 1740 AD. The monastery sits at an elevation of 4500 ft and is easily accessible via transports like cars, jeeps, taxis, etc. from Magan in Sikkim.

Currently, the Phodong Monastery is a major tourist attraction of Sikkim, and houses around 260 monks of the Kagyu lineage. The walls of the monastery are adorned with beautiful murals, paintings, and frescos which can astonish anyone.

By Air: Nearest airport is Bagdogra in West Bengal (124 km), from where scheduled flights operate to and fro from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati.

By Rail: Two nearest railway stations are at Siliguri (114 km) and New Jalpaiguri (125 km) with rail links to Calcutta, Delhi, Guwahati, Lucknow and other important cities in India.

By Road: Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim is connected via roads to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Siliguri and also to all the District headquarters within Sikkim.
