Indian Air Force Museum Delhi
The only one of its kind in India - Air Force Museum is a fine alliance of Indian Military Aviation and Indian Air Force. This museum showcases a rich collection of planes that played/playing a crucial role in defending the country over the decades. Situated right next to the technical area gate of Palam Air Force Station, this museum gives you a glimpse of extensive past of Indian Air Force. With its remarkable and diverse collection of memorials, photographs, and artefacts, Air Force Museum makes for an ideal destination in New Delhi to explore the enthralling world of India Air Force. Along with that, the museum also boasts a number of galleries that commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation. Annexe is one such gallery that exhibits some splendid portraits of some dedicated officers, who were also the pioneers of the Indian Air Force.
It has three sections on display; the first one displays the history of IAF through photographs, aircraft models, and the photographs of late officers who fought bravely in World War I. The second section exhibits the photographs of Indian officers who were the significant part of World War II. Along with that, the section also includes arms that were seized from Pakistan back in 1966 and 1971, ceremonial swords, and old uniforms of the 1930s of Air Force officers and Hawai Sepoys. Moreover, the section of Annexe exhibits some important artefacts that belong to modern aviation history. These include photographs, Indo-Soviet Joint Manned Spaceship-Siyuz T-11 model, and mementoes.
Another significant gallery in Indian Air Force Museum is hanger where around 15 different types military aircraft are kept on display. Since the foundation of Indian Air Force on 8th October 1932, these aircraft have served as pillars of IAF. Amongst those crafts, Westland Lysander, Vickers Spitfire, the British Vampire, the French Toofani, and Japanese Kamikaze Glider are some prominent ones that kept on display. Apart from these, the most stunning attraction of the museum is a wall where mentioned a Roll of Honour. On this wall, the names of all the officers and men who laid down their lives in 1947’s Kashmir Operations, India Pakistan conflicts in 1965 & 1971, and 1962’s Chinese Aggression. On a whole, India Air Force Museum is definitely one of the top tourist attractions in New Delhi to take a tour to the glorious past of IAF.
