Changabang Peak Uttarakhand
Gem of the Garhwal Himalayas; Changabang peak is situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Changabang is one among the group of peaks that forms the north-east wall of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. The peak has an altitude of 6,864 m above the sea level, which is comparatively lesser than the other peaks in the immediate vicinity, including the neighboring peak of Kalanka residing to its east. Though no the tallest, but its steep and rocky peak covered in milky white snow is considered as one of the world’s most challenging climb. When seen from a distance, Changabang peak seems like a bride waiting in her veil hidden face, which is an outstanding site to behold.
Among the adventure enthusiasts, Changabang is a famous mountain for trekking and peak climbing activities in the state of Uttarakhand. The fulfilling trek to Changabang peak crosses the beautiful villages, colorful meadows and chilled valleys, with its peak providing the enchanting views of the mighty mountains blesses the climbers with an unforgettable mountaineering experience in the Uttarakhand Himalayas. The first ascent to this peak was made by an expedition led by Lt. Col Balwant Sandhu and Chris Bonington on 4th June 1974. The route they chose was the Southeast Face, leading to the East Ridge, which is considered to be the easiest route by being a snow climb rather than the difficult rock climb or a climb of mixed terrain.
Being the nearest motorable place, the trek to Changabang peak starts from Joshimath and Bagini Glacier provide as its basecamp. Apart from the Southeast Face, the other routes to reach the Changabang Peak are the Southwest Ridge route, Direct South Face route, Big Wall Climbing route, South Ridge route, North Face route and the Lightning route which is a demanding new route on the north face.
