Nanda Ghunti Peak Uttarakhand
Located in the outer rim of Nanda Devi Sanctuary, Nanda Ghunti peak is the magnificent gem of the Garhwal Himalayas. It is a 6,309 m high mountain situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Though it is not one of the tallest peak but is quite popular among the adventure enthusiasts for activities like trekking and peak climbing. In the year 1907, Nanda Ghunti peak was first surveyed by T.G Longstaff. Then, in the year 1931, the peak was surveyed again the legendary mountaineer Eric Shipton from the west ridge. Whereas, the first serious attempt to reach to the Nanda Ghunti peak was made British mountaineers B.R. Goodfellow and J. Buzzard. And finally in the year 1947, a Swiss team under the leadership of André Roch made the first ascent via the east ridge route.
For the mountaineers, it is a straightforward climb to this major peak of the world heritage area of Nanda devi biosphere reserve. It is blessed with the amazing views of the crater lake i.e Roopkund that mesmerises th trekkers with its unsurpassable beauty and charm. In order to start for the trek to Nanda Ghunti peak, one has to reach Sitel which is the nearest place that is accessible through motorable roads. After reaching there, the trek starts via Sutol, Lata ki Khopri, Chandania Ghat till Homkund which is the base camp. Sitel is reached from Karnaprayag which has got the well-connectivity through train, plane and buses from major cities and town of India.
