Suitilla Peak Uttarakhand

Suitilla means the peak of needle is the stupendous piece of mountain architecture blessed with conical shaped peak and knife edged ridge on all the sides. Being a part of the Kumaon Himalayas; Suitilla peak is situated in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. It lies above the junction of Sankalp, Kalabaland and Yankchar glaciers. Suitilla peak has an elevation of 6,373 m above the sea level, that provides the amazing views of the Panchachuli group of mountains. Whereas, to the south of this peak lies the Ralam Dhura pass which connects Ralam valley to Darma valley. Hence, it is considered to be an amazing mountain for trekking and peak climbing in the Uttarakhand Himalayas. The availability of such adventure activities and beautiful peaks are the main reason behind the growth of Uttarakhand tourism in India.

Due to the incredible structure of the Suitilla Peak, it requires adventure experts blessed with the high standards of rock and ice climbing capabilities. As per the records, the peak was first climbed in the year 2001 by an Indo-British joint expedition comprising of two Britishers; Graham Little and Jim Lowther, also including an expedition team from the Indian navy which was led by Lt. Cdr. Satyabrata Dam. For mountaineering in Suitilla Peak of Uttarakhand, the easiest route to the summit is the southwest face from the Ralam village that stays over the Yankchar Dhura pass and down to Yankchar glacier. The other approaches to the Suitilla mountain is almost impossible. About 200 km away from Suitilla east is Suitilla west which is still unclimbed due to sharp edges on the ridge. To reach Ralam village, one has to reach Panchachuli first through Munsiyari. It is the nearest place that is accessible through motorable roads that are further connected to the other major cities of Uttarakhand. Hence, Munsiyari is the starting point for most of the treks into the Kumaon Himalayas.
